RYAN LOOKS OVER AT ME, a look of awe obvious on his face. His mouth hangs slightly open. I look around the table and see a similar expression on each face except that of his mother, who is beaming at me. So this is what home feels like, what a close-knit family is really like. I’d always wondered.

“Carly, I think you just found a way to top a cruise. I can’t believe it. I thought I’d finally won the best gift contest, and you show me up on the first day you meet him with a documentary you made on your own,” Ryan says. I can’t tell if he’s upset that I topped him (though I still think a cruise is pretty awesome!) or just happy that I fit into his family.

“Oh, I’m sorry Ryan, I didn’t mean to…” I trail off, hoping I haven’t overstepped my bounds with the gift. I wanted to do something nice for Mr. Andrews, and without knowing what World War II films or books he already owned, I thought turning my college essay into a documentary would be something new.

“It’s not a bad thing; it’s probably one of the most thoughtful gifts anyone could have given my dad. You took the one thing you knew about him and created a gift that can never be topped.” He looks at me with such tenderness and awe, a light in his eyes like his mother described.

Ryan leans over to whisper in my ear. "When did you have time for that?"

"Lunch breaks, after work, before bed. You'd be surprised how much can be accomplished when you forego sleep!"

He turns his whole body toward me, and then cradles my face in his hands. In a soft voice, he says to me, “Carly Sparks, I love you.”

He loves me? He loves me! He loves me! How I’ve longed to hear those exact words, from someone who actually means them! I hear them from my friends and from my family when we get off the phone (even if sometimes it sounds forced), but to hear them from someone who is in love with me? I think that this is as close to Heaven as one can get and still be alive!

Ryan kisses me with a subtle passion that makes me a little uncomfortable when I realize all conversation in the room has ceased. I have a sneaking suspicion that we’re being stared at, and look up to see everyone smiling at us.
